If you are experiencing accuracy or repeatability problems with your Quantum Max or FARO Laser ScanArm system, this section details proper setup techniques to help you identify the potential sources of error.

It is important to clearly understand all the “do's and don'ts” in order to get the most out of every Quantum Max and Laser ScanArm.

Issues That Will Degrade Accuracy

Mounting

Deflection in mounting:

DO NOT mount to any type of wooden surface.
DO NOT mount to optical tables such as a “Vibraplane.” The steel sheet on the top of these tables is thin and will deflect.

Folding tripods without using the stabilizing struts are unstable.
Heavy-duty stands with wheels down and pins up are unstable.
Part deformation due to excessive clamping force.

Compensation

Deflection of compensation artifact.

FARO Laser Line Probe:

Damage to compensation artifact.

DO NOT drag the probe over the FARO Compensation Plate during the plane measurement. Lift the probe in between points to avoid scratching the surface of the plate.

Poor probe compensation technique.

DO NOT do short sweeps with the Laser Line Probe during compensation.

Dirty lens.

Clean the top and bottom lenses with the cloth from the Laser Line Probe case. Dirt and grease on either lens can cause poor results.

Probes

Measuring with Point Probes.
Measuring with chipped, loose or cracked ball probes.
Measuring with probe extensions. The extensions will deflect.

Measurement Environment

Measuring close to an end stop can induce unwanted stress.
Binding or hyper-extending the Quantum Max can cause unnecessary stress.
“Leap Frogging” or repositioning the device using the Move Device Position command.
Excessive vibration in the surrounding area can produce unwanted results.
Rapid changes in ambient temperature can cause errors in the Quantum Max's automatic temperature compensation.
Measuring using poor techniques; minimum number of measured points per feature, moving while recording individual points, small coverage area, etc.

If the Quantum Max is mounted on granite, do not measure objects that are not mounted to the granite.
